V5.2 is the protocol between an Access Network (AN) and a Local Exchange (LE). The analog line terminations are at the AN (capacity ranges from 2000 to 8000 subscribers). Dial-tone is provided by the LE. V5.2 helps is conveying the subscriber line states to the LE.
